Tantalus For Sale!

We got another tantalus set in! 

First your mythology lesson for the day:

Tantalus was a Greek mythological figure, most famous for his eternal punishment in Tartarus. He was made to stand in a pool of water beneath a fruit tree with low branches, with the fruit ever eluding his grasp, and the water always receding before he could take a drink.

The protagonist always being "tantalized" for the fruit that is eternally out of reach is an analogy to the the servants of the liquor caddies owner. Always wanting the fruit/liquor but never being able to acquire it!

This is a detailed shot of the parquetry work on the liquor caddy. Awesome.

New Farm Table

A four-plank black walnut table. If you look closely (the pictures can be enlarged by clicking them) the outside boards are bookmatched and the inner two boards are bookmatched! All the lumber came from the SAME TREE!

         The legs and skirt are made from Red Oak, very strong have a great grain pattern when shellaced, painted and distressed.

Hell, we even made a bench from the last plank of the tree!

The customer saw the set of benches I had put on this blog and said I want the same ones! 8) 

Claro Walnut Coffee Table

One of my coffee tables is for sale in "The Nature Gallery" on Foster street in Dothan. It is made of Black Walnut, which is my favorite wood to work. The slab pictured is made of Claro Walnut, usually reserved for high-end gun stocks and musical instuments. It has the prettiest "quilted grain" I have seen on anything that has come through my workshop.

This shows a "butterfly" used to keep the slab from splitting.

Even though wood has long been cut and dried at the time of construction, it still can expand and contract due to changes in humidity. When it is extremely humid like it is now your solid-wood furniture will swell, sometimes causing drawers to feel tighter or seams in joined-wood to close slightly. In the colder months, just the opposite.

This is a picture of it on a wrought-iron base.

The top is for sale with or without the base, depending on personal taste...
